To the Editor.

—In the October 1985 issue of the ARCHIVES, Dr Anderson published a wonderful editorial, "Eyelid Tattooing."¹I do not think that the eyelid tattooing per se is unethical. I do believe, however, that to give the impression to the public that this operation is anything but tattooing and that it requires the skill and the charges of an ophthalmic surgeon is totally and unequivocally unethical and misleading. Certainly, in some plastic surgery conditions, the operation might have its place in the hands of a skilled surgeon; otherwise, it is best left to the tattoo parlors.

The only sentence in Dr Anderson's editorial with which I would like to take issue is the following, which appeared in item 9 on page 1470: "Instead, radial keratotomy and intraocular lens specialists appear most vocal in promoting and performing eyelid tattooing."
