Dr Richard Darrell has edited a comprehensive textbook of viral diseases with known ocular involvement. The book is organized taxonomically by viral families, with chapters in each division devoted to individual species. Thirty-three renowned experts on ocular virology have contributed to this edition. Every chapter is well written and organized and is complemented by superb illustrations and extensive bibliographies.

There are several chapters on rare viral syndromes (eg, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, subacute sclerosing panencephalitis) and viral syndromes that are becoming increasingly important (eg, acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis, cytomegalovirus). These chapters provide discussions that are more thorough than those provided in standard textbooks. The chapter on acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis is the best in the book. This chapter contains extensive epidemiology of this new phenomenon, and may be the most comprehensive and best review of this topic in the world's literature.
