Drs Bennett and Rabbetts have written an eminent textbook to succeed H. H. Emsley's classic for advanced students of visual optics. The latter's fifth (latest) edition was published in 1952 and reprinted frequently to date. About 20 years ago I had the pleasure of reviewing Dr Bennett's (and Dr Francis') contribution, Visual Optics, which was then part of Hugh Davson's series, The Eye. Clinical Visual Optics incorporates some of that material as well as Emsley's and expands it significantly in a substantially new compilation of information.
The book is outstanding. It provides basic and advanced information on the dioptrics of the eye, various subjective and objective refraction techniques, optical instruments used in the eye examination, and the side effects of spectacles, contact lenses, and their aberrations; and it also includes up-to-date discussions of the physiological bases for acuity, stereopsis, and the ocular motor system.
