Venkataswamy Awarded Honorary Degree.

—Govindappa Venkataswamy was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science Degree by the University of Illinois, Chicago, during ceremonies commemorating the dedication of the Lions of Illinois Eye Research Institute on June 28 and 29, 1985. Dr Venkataswamy is the founding director of the Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai, India, and president of the Govel Trust. He also serves as president of the Cataract Group of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness and is an expert consultant to the World Health Organization.

His citation by the University of Illinois noted that he had been personally responsible for cataract surgery on several hundred thousand villagers and other patients in India over the past several years. Other humanitarian contributions included the establishment of a school for the blind, rehabilitation centers for visually disabled people, and vitamin studies on nutritional eye disease.
