In this one-hour program, James Rayner moderates seven techniques of extracapsular cataract extraction with posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation. After an excellent basic introduction to the principles of the surgery, each of these eminent cataract surgeons presents a tightly edited surgical case, from anterior capsulotomy through lens implantation. In all but one instance, the surgeon, himself, narrates his own technique. The quality of the recordings is generally excellent. Time does not permit discussion of management of difficult cases and complications.
"... highly recommended for all extracapsular cataract surgeons."
The videotape format is particularly well suited for teaching microsurgical technique. The viewer can view and review portions according to his particular interests. A resident learning cataract surgery or an experienced intracapsular surgeon converting to extracapsular technique should benefit from seeing both the similarities and differences in techniques without being confused, while an experienced extracapsular surgeon can focus on particular details.
