—At the time we completed our study, we noted "Age-related histopathologic changes have been found in the periphery in those retinal layers... that typically become affected by AMD, but none of these peripheral changes have been correlated with the presence or absence of AMD." This was one of the motivations for our study. We are very interested in the histopathologic and clinical findings reported since then by Lewis et al and by others^' of the association of RDPE, a reticular pattern of pigment surrounding peripheral drusen, with AMD.

To date, however, we are unaware of any evidence showing a change in retinal function with RDPE. Our patients were examined with indirect ophthalmoscopy for peripheral change, and two were noted to have significant peripheral changes—reticular pigment change (patient 20 in our study) and heavy drusen deposition peripherally (patient 3 in our study).
