—We read with interest the article in the June ARCHIVES by Sunness et al.¹ The authors stated that peripheral retinal changes have not been correlated with the presence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

We wish to draw the attention of your readers to a paper we presented at the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting in 1984, in which a study of reticular degeneration of the pigment epithelium (RDPE) in 750 eyes obtained at autopsy and 100 eyes of patients was reported. Reticular degeneration of the pigment epithelium is an acquired, age-related process, which was found to correlate with AMD. We compared cases of RDPE with a control group, and we found that macular degenerative changes are statistically more frequent in cases (P <.001). Moreover, more advanced grades of RDPE are associated with more advanced macular degenerative abnormalities. We concluded that RDPE and age-related macular degenerative changes . . .
