—I regret that Stark et al believe we have "misrepresented the intent and content of [their] past articles on extended-wear contact lenses by stating that [they] reported no significant complications." This was not our intent. However, they reported "... good visual results with a minimum of complications,"1 "... no cases of infectious corneal ulcers or scarring or permanent visual loss,"¹ and "... no infectious corneal ulcers and no significant corneal neovascularization" (at 22 months' follow-up).²

These statements, which we believed connoted minimal complications with continuous wear of soft contact lenses, did prompt us to review and analyze our own experience³ and that of others.^4,5 As reported, we³ did note a significant incidence of potentially serious corneal complications. Others have reported a similar incidence of serious corneal complications, including infected corneal ulcers.^4,5
