A book of this type was written originally by the distinguished senior author and Lloyd-Luke in 1955, the first edition of the present book was published in 1974, and the 1984 edition has Curran as co-author with Trevor-Roper commenting in the preface: "As the pattern of ophthalmology changes apace, the attitudes of a single ageing author can easily congeal unless fortified by a younger associate. Hence this new joint appraisal." The 1974 edition was dedicated largely to postgraduate students, and the present edition is "a comprehensive outline" with the hope that students will look deeper into the subspecialty literature on ophthalmology. Under "Acknowledgements," the authors not only thank colleagues at Moorfield's Eye Hospital, London, and the Institute of Ophthalmology, but also the authors of six textbooks, some of whose illustrations are converted to excellent line and half-tone drawings.
