This compact book comprises the proceedings of the second International Symposium on Visual Optics, held in Tucson, Arizona, on Oct 23 to 25, 1982, as a satellite meeting of the 24th International Congress of Ophthalmology. Contributors included visual scientists, ophthalmologists, optometrists, and optical engineers from both academia and industry. Countries represented included the United States, Japan, Canada, France, England, and Switzerland.

Two keynote addresses are included in the publication, a provocative essay on the anatomy of ocular optics by R. A. Weale, and an up-to-date review of electrophysiologic testing by I. M. Siegel. A section on optical characteristics of the eye includes mathematical modeling and a method to locate the visual axis precisely. The section on objective refractometry includes some of the first published descriptions of the Japanese infrared automated refractors, along with clinical trial data and accommodation studies.
