—I would like to respond to Dr Fonda's¹ article in the December ARCHIVES. I agree fully with his thesis that visually handicapped persons who need a driver's license should, when possible, receive a waiver for the impaired vision. This is particularly true for persons with a visual acuity in the range of 20/40 to 20/70. I would suggest that these persons have a road test performed by the local registry office before obtaining the waiver. However, many states at the present time do not allow for such a waiver. The bioptic telescope then becomes not only an aid to driving, but a necessity to pass the driver's test.
