This paperback book presents a survey of the surgical techniques and preliminary results of radial keratotomy for myopia, as performed by three different surgeons in the Analysis of Radial Keratotomy (ARK) Study Group, in which data management and analysis were conducted by a biostatistician and an ophthalmologist specializing in clinical trials. The authors established the ARK Study in 1981 because data on radial keratotomy extant at that time were inadequate to judge the safety and efficacy of the procedure.

In a brief history of radial keratotomy, the authors erroneously attribute the first case of radial keratotomy to Dr S. Fyodorov in 1974, even though the procedure had been performed in Japan and Russia for the preceding 30 years. Fyodorov pioneered efforts to make the operation results more predictable.
