Since the late 1980s, there have been several reports of an association between cataract surgery and age-related macular degeneration (AMD).1-11 Some report a cross-sectional association1-2,8; some, incidence of AMD after surgery9-10; and yet others report progression to more severe AMD.4-5,10 Still, there are some studies that do not find a significant association after controlling for relevant confounders.12-13 What might explain the disparate results? In my estimation, the diversity of findings in no small part begins with differences in study design.
Case series are often useful in early descriptions of new problems and about the prognosis of such conditions14 and have been among the most common types of published studies15 concerning this association. For example, Blair and Ferguson4 described the development of retinal pigment epithelial detachments secondary to macular degeneration that occurred after cataract extraction. Pollack and colleagues5 described progression of AMD in . . . [Full Text of this Article] AUTHOR INFORMATION
