The initial work of Giovanni Battista Quadri (1780-1851) was as an anatomist in Bologna before settling in Naples, where he opened Italy's first ophthalmic hospital in 1815; he remained its director until his death. Quadri wrote the 4-volume Annotazioni Pratiche sulle Malattie degli Occhi Raccolte nella Reale Scuolu Clinica di Napoli (1818-1830). His son Alessandro (1827-1869) was also a well-known ophthalmologist and professor of military surgery.
In Italy in 1826, a lifetime commemorative medal by the artist V. Catenacci was struck in tin, 40 mm in diameter. The obverse side depicts his bust facing right within a circle of words saying, "IO. BAPT. QVADRIO. AVDITORES. AMICIQVE. VICENTIEN. AN. 1780." The artist's name is within the curve at the bottom in smaller letters: "V. CATENACCI F." On the reverse, is an inscription in 5 lines, "OPHTHAL/ MIATRORVM/ OMNIS. AEVI/ FACULE. PRINICIPI/ NEAP. 1826," surrounded by an eye above and 2 snakes . . . [Full Text of this Article]
