A native of Lyon, Joseph Gensoul (1797-1858) returned to his birthplace to practice medicine after obtaining his MD in Paris in 1824. A highly skilled and innovative surgeon, he is the inventor of cauterization of the cornea and was the first to perform strabismus surgery on a cadaver. He also made improvements in the techniques of rhinoplasty and cleft palate surgery. Among his limited publications, Sur le mecanisme de la vision (1851) is one of his most important.

In France in 1858, a commemorative medal by the artist E. Mouterde was struck in bronze, 54 mm in diameter.

The obverse depicts Gensoul's bust facing right, with E·MOUTERDE. below it. The following appears within curve around: J^PH FER^ND GENSOUL NÉ A LYON 8 JANV.1797.
