Arch Ophthalmol. 2008;126(6):861.

Since this article does not have an abstract, we have provided the first 150 words of the full text and any section headings.

A native of Lyon, Joseph Gensoul (1797-1858) returned to his birthplace to practice medicine after obtaining his MD in Paris in 1824. A highly skilled and innovative surgeon, he is the inventor of cauterization of the cornea and was the first to perform strabismus surgery on a cadaver. In France in 1858, a commemorative medal by the artist E. Mouterde was struck in bronze, 54 mm in diameter.

The obverse depicts Gensoul's bust facing right, with E·MOUTERDE. below it. The following appears within curve around: JPH FERND GENSOUL NÉ A LYON 8 JANV.1797.
