We thank Drs Sommer and Tielsch for their suggestion to use high perfusion pressure as a continuous variable while analyzing its relationship to POAG and for reminding us of their hypothesis that the association between systemic hypertension and POAG might depend on age.1 They showed that the odds ratio for POAG went up to 6.2 (with wide 95% confidence intervals) when the diastolic perfusion pressure (diastolic blood pressure – intraocular pressure) dropped below 50 mm Hg.1 They also demonstrated a nonsignificant inverse association between systemic hypertension and POAG in persons younger than 60 years and a positive association in persons older than 70 years.1 Their younger-age hypothesis with regards to systemic hypertension and POAG could not be confirmed in the cross-sectional Barbados . . .
