In 1938, the work of Bucklers and his associate Gilch resulted in an orderly classification of the corneal dystrophies. In an investigation undertaken for the German government, under the sterilization of the unfit order, these workers carefully examined 12 family groups, consisting of 800 individuals, living in 35 small communities in Wuertemberg. Among them were a total of 129 patients suffering from some type of corneal dystrophy.
