Are We There Yet?

All of us who have managed uveal melanoma are in great hopes of being able to better care for our patients. The role of cytogenetics in the management of melanoma offers exciting prospects for refocusing our approach in the treatment of patients with this tumor. In this point-counterpoint discussion, the opinions of the investigators from both Wills Oncology Service and the Division of Ocular Oncology at the University of California at San Francisco are expressed. Investigators from the Wills Oncology Service suggest that cytogenetic information is now being used to guide their practice; the Wills group embraces fine-needle aspiration biopsy as a method to provide information. Investigators from the University of California offer a more cautious view and advise additional studies, including a search for an alternative to fine-needle aspiration biopsy.
