There is little in the literature concerning the effect of penicillin on Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Abraham, Chain, and Florey, as a result of their in vitro experiments, reported the tubercle bacillus to be insensitive to penicillin.
Penicillin G, given in massive doses, had no appreciable chemical effect on the course of inoculation ocular tuberculosis in the nonimmune rabbit. It likewise had no effect in preventing the spread of the organisms from the eye to the viscera, 6 animals in each series showing microscopic visceral lesions.
The conclusion that this particular sample of penicillin G had no therapeutic effect on ocular tuberculosis in the nonimmune rabbit is inescapable.
