Yannuzzi et al1 describe a clinical study of idiopathic macular telangiectasia with the goals of establishing a new and simplified classification of the condition and examining the frequency of the disease. Idiopathic macular telangiectasia is an uncommon condition with an unknown pathogenesis and no recognized treatment. In 1993, Gass and Blodi2 proposed a classification consisting of a number of stages and subgroups based on 140 patients examined over a period of 28 years. Yannuzzi and colleagues used newer techniques of examining the retina, including optical coherence tomography and high-speed indocyanine green angiography, offering a more detailed investigation of the vascular and structural changes associated with this condition. Based on these findings and the rarity of one of the subgroups, they proposed a revised classification that may simplify the previous complex classification. A rare group, occlusive telangiectasia (group 3), was deleted from the classification.
