Radial Optic Neurotomy for Management of Hemicentral Retinal Vein Occlusion

Since this article does not have an abstract, we have provided the first 150 words of the full text and any section headings.

I was interested to read the article by García-Arumí et al1 that is based on an uncontrolled study of 13 selected eyes with hemicentral retinal vein occlusion (HCRVO) that underwent radial optic neurotomy (RON). I have studied about 200 eyes with HCRVO as a part of my research on various aspects of retinal vein occlusion since 1973. Based on that experience, I would like to make the following observations about this study.

García-Arumí and colleagues conclude the following:

Radial optic neurotomy seems to be a potential treatment in selected patients with hemicentral retinal vein occlusion, probably because of the more rapid appearance of retinochorioretinal [retinochoroidal] collateral vessels, which promote faster resolution of macular edema.1

From this, it seems that their primary objective was to demonstrate that RON is the treatment of choice on the grounds that RON promotes development of "retinochoroidal" (retinociliary) collateral vessels on the optic disc to bypass . . . [Full Text of this Article]
