I found the article written by Lee et al1 entitled "A Multicenter, Retrospective Pilot Study of Resource Use and Costs Associated With Severity of Disease in Glaucoma" to be quite interesting. Lee and colleagues used a new classification of visual field defect severity on which I would like to comment.
I introduced a method for classifying glaucomatous visual field defects2 10 years ago called the Glaucoma Staging System (GSS). This method (Figure) uses both the Humphrey mean deviation and corrected pattern standard deviation (or Octopus corrected loss variance) plotted on an x-y diagram. The GSS allows the user to quickly classify defect severity in 6 different stages and subdivides visual field defects into 3 groups (generalized, mixed, and localized defects).
Figure appears in full text version.
