I found the article written by Lee et al¹ entitled "A Multicenter, Retrospective Pilot Study of Resource Use and Costs Associated With Severity of Disease in Glaucoma" to be quite interesting. Lee and colleagues used a new classification of visual field defect severity on which I would like to comment.

I introduced a method for classifying glaucomatous visual field defects² 10 years ago called the Glaucoma Staging System (GSS). This method (Figure) uses both the Humphrey mean deviation and corrected pattern standard deviation (or Octopus corrected loss variance) plotted on an x-y diagram. The GSS allows the user to quickly classify defect severity in 6 different stages and subdivides visual field defects into 3 groups (generalized, mixed, and localized defects).
