The article titled "Revised Indications for the Treatment of Retinopathy of Prematurity"1 provided results of treatment on eyes with prethreshold retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) that were at highest risks for the development of threshold ROP. Based on the study data, the authors recommend a clinical algorithm to treat cases with ROP. Is it possible to look at the data slightly differently?
1. Functional outcome: The treatment reduced unfavorable visual outcomes from 19.5% to 14.5%. While this is statistically significant, if we calculate a confidence interval for this difference, the interval crosses zero and extends from 0.75% to 10.75%. Odds ratios from discordant pairs substantiate this and show an odds ratio of 2.88. The number needed to treat (NNT) for this intervention2 is 20 (Table 41). NNT indicates how many patients similar to the study patients must be treated (as the average study group patient was treated) to obtain 1 . . . [Full Text of this Article] AUTHOR INFORMATION
