One of the most exciting developments in oculoplastics has been the increased use of endoscopic techniques for orbital and lacrimal surgery. The overlap between otolaryngology and ophthalmology does have historical roots, and endonasal surgery enhances this relationship. Nevertheless, orbital and lacrimal endoscopy are challenging to learn, and published reports as well as personal communications reveal high variance in outcomes. Hence, many oculoplastic surgeons are frustrated with suboptimal results and time-consuming learning curves. And the overlap with otolaryngology may be difficult to manage, especially in a private practice setting.
