Ramon Castroviejo (1904-1987), born in Spain, became one of the most famous ophthalmologists of his era as a pioneer in corneal transplantation surgery. He invented many surgical instruments, some of which are still in use today. The Castroviejo Cornea Society struck a medal in his honor in 1975. It is a 51-mm bronze medal created by the firm Calico (Madrid, Spain).

The obverse, Figure 1, depicts the bust of Castroviejo facing right. It is inscribed "Ramon Castroviejo." The reverse, Figure 2, depicts an eye with a square keratoplasty incision. It is inscribed "The Castroviejo Society, MDMLXXV." (Note date is engraved in error; it should have read MCMLXXV.)
