Uhthoff reported two cases of fracture of the skull with effusion of blood at the base. The hemorrhages passed along the optic nerves both within the dural heath and without. In both cases, some hours after the injury, the picture of optic neuritis appeared with great venous congestion and pronounced edema of the disc. At the autopsy in both cases much blood was found in the dilated nerve sheaths.
