Uveal Melanoma in Asian Indians: A Clinicopathological Study

Malignant melanoma of the uvea is considered rare among Asian Indians.
There are only one small series1 and a few
case-reports2-4
on uveal melanoma from India; no large studies have been reported. From 1987-1999,
we retrospectively analyzed the clinical and histopathological characteristics
of uveal melanoma in Asian Indians registered in the ocular oncology department
of our tertiary care institute.
We studied 71 enucleated eyes with clinical and histopathological diagnoses
of uveal melanoma. The clinical and pathological features were correlated.
Over a period of 12 years, 71 (0.02%) of 345 331 patients had uveal melanomas.
Forty (56%) were men, and 31 (44%) were women. More right eyes (63%) than
left eyes (37%) were involved. The age range of patients was 15 to 82 years.
The mean ± SD age was 46.1 ± 13.8 years. Thirty-seven patients
(52%) were younger than 45 years. Orbital cellulitis was seen in 2 patients
