Ophthalmology in Australia

THE INTERNATIONAL Congress of Ophthalmology, inaugurated in Brussels, Belgium, 145 years ago, is the oldest international medical meeting. Hosting of the 29th Congress in April 2002 fell to Sydney, Australia. As well as being a resounding success for international ophthalmology, this first Australian International Congress of Ophthalmology became a showcase for ophthalmology "down under." Australia has a fine tradition in ophthalmology and visual science, with roots from Britain and Europe, but the nation now increasingly follows the practice and trends of ophthalmology in the United States. Regular contributions to published material in the ARCHIVES and other highly ranked American journals are now made by Australian ophthalmologists.

The land mass of Australia was inhabited by aboriginal descendents for around 40 000 years prior to settlement of Sydney by the British in 1778. In 1901, the Commonwealth of Australia was born as a federation of 6 states and 2 territories. A new capital . . . [Full Text of this Article]
