Ophthalmology in Peru

PERU IS a country located at the central-west margin of South America. The land area is approximately 1 285 216 km2, and it is divided into 3 major natural regions: the coast, the Andes mountains, and the jungle. The country has 26 million inhabitants. Peru is a country in development, 60% of its population is classified as poor; half of these are considered in extreme poverty. Lima, the capital city, contains a third of the country's population. Approximately 40% of the population is unable to access health services owing to economic circumstances and geographic location.

In the year 2001, 35% of Peru's 26 million inhabitants were aged 15 years or younger, 60% were between 15 and 65 years old, and 5% were older than 65 years.
