Dr P. Watson-Williams said that recently much investigation had taken
place to find a satisfactory substitute for cocaine. The toxicity of cocaine
and its abuse by the narcomaniac had brought the matter much into the public
eye. Mr R. Foster Moore pointed out that those local anesthetics were used
in different ways by the various specialities. Speaking as an ophthalmic surgeon
for infiltration anaesthesia he was entirely satisfied with novocaine 2 per
cent, but for intraocular operations cocaine so far led the field.
