Edward Nettleship, 1845-1913, of London, England, was a surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital and a founder of the Ophthalmological Society of the United Kingdom. After his retirement from clinical practice in 1902, Nettleship devoted the rest of his career to the research of hereditary eye diseases. He was a pioneer investigator in the role of heredity in night blindness, retinitis pigmentosa, and other diseases.
In 1903, a commemorative bronze award medal was created. It was designed by the artist, F. Bowcher. The obverse, Figure 1, depicts a bust of Nettleship facing left with an inscription in Latin of his age, 58, and the year, 1903. The reverse, Figure 2, is inscribed "To Commemorate Edward Nettleship's Work and to Encourage Research in Ophthalmology." Below the inscription is a spray of laurel.
