Ophthalmology in Israel

ISRAEL IS A SMALL STATE with unique problems and challenges. While being immersed in a continuing struggle with its Palestinian and other Arab neighbors since gaining independence in 1948, it is continually absorbing immigrants in great numbers, almost doubling its population in the last 25 years. Despite these 2 heavy national responsibilities, which exert a substantial burden on its economy, Israel has been fortunate to build a very stable society and economic structure, especially excelling in the development of advanced technology, bioscience, and sophisticated agriculture. Medicine and medical research at large, as well as ophthalmology in particular, are of the highest quality in Israel. Life expectancy in Israel is 76 and 80 years in men and women, respectively, and the infant mortality rate is 5.9 per 1000 births.
