The Ranking of Ophthalmology Centers in Ophthalmology and Lay Publications Is Appropriate for Medicine in Today's Business World

RECOGNITION of centers of excellence for outstanding clinical and research activity serves as an important feedback mechanism to institutions, ophthalmologists, students, and patients and their families. These rankings serve to let patients, physicians, and students know which are the top clinical and research programs. This information is important for patients who may wish second opinions and for students who may wish to determine where they may want to train. In addition, it is important to give recognition to programs that may have shown great improvements in the year, and stimulate other programs to do so.

Of great importance is who does the ranking. The ranking that we have used at Ophthalmology Times during the last few years is based on the opinions of the chairmen and residency directors of the academic departments of all the medical schools in the United States.
