A 12-YEAR-OLD Japanese boy visited our department for an ophthalmological examination. About 3 months after his birth, some of the black hair on his left occipital region turned yellow, and parts of the skin on his chest, left side of the abdomen, and back lost pigmentation. A diagnosis of hypomelanosis of Ito was made. Examination at ages 2 and 6 years demonstrated depigmentation of the fundi.
Examination at age 12 years showed that his corrected visual acuity was 20/20 OD and 20/15 OS. Slitlamp biomicroscopy showed depigmentation in part of the iris, and diffuse depigmentation was observed in the fundus (Figure 1). Fluorescein angiography revealed punctate hyperfluorescence (Figure 2). Goldmann perimetry and electroretinographic responses were normal.
