Who Should Perform Face-lifts?

OCULOPLASTIC SURGEONS are performing face-lifts. This has come as a surprise to some physicians. Physicians in other specialties who perform face-lifts, such as maxillofacial surgeons, general plastic surgeons, facial plastic surgeons, and dermatologists, have suggested that it is inappropriate for ophthalmologists to perform face-lifts, and even within our own specialty there are those who have expressed reservations about ophthalmologists becoming involved in plastic surgery extending outside the orbital margin. In this editorial, I will examine the evolution of oculoplastic surgery that has resulted in oculoplastic surgeons performing face-lifts, address the difficult question of who should perform face-lifts, and discuss some of the special qualifications of oculoplastic surgeons for facial plastic surgery.
Oculoplastic surgery is a relatively young subspecialty.
