Abstract
The responses of intraocular pressure and outflow facility to echothiophate iodide concentrations from 0.03% to 0.25% were studied in open-angle glaucomatous patients. At doses beyond 0.06%, a large number of subjective complaints were encountered, whereas no improvement in either intraocular pressure or outflow facility occurred beyond this dosage. There would seem, therefore, to be little rationale for the use of this drug in high concentration. Despite impressive changes in the mean intraocular pressure and outflow facilities, fewer than half of the patients in this group attained intraocular pressure levels of 19 mm Hg or less on the highest drug concentration utilized. Where adequate clinical control is not attained with 0.06% echothiophate iodide, either the drug should be changed or a second drug added, rather than increasing the echothiophate concentration further.
