Influence of the Water Drinking Test on Scleral Rigidity

Zarko M. Vucicevic, MD; Joanna Ralston, BS; William P. Burns, MD; Helen P. Gaffney, MD

Arch Ophthalmol. 1969;82(6):761-770.

Abstract

Scleral rigidity was calculated on 59 glaucoma suspect patients before and after the water drinking test. It was found that scleral rigidity was decreased in 50 cases after the water drinking test. The decrease was most pronounced in the group that had shown decreased scleral rigidity before the water drinking test. The negative correlation between age and scleral rigidity as well as between refraction error and scleral rigidity indicates that the change in scleral rigidity was influenced only by the water drinking test. The maximal decrease in scleral rigidity occurred between 60 and 80 minutes after the water drinking test.
