The Effects of Photo- and Laser Coagulation on the Retinal Vasculature

A Comparative Study

Larry W. Wood, MD; Robert C. Watzke, MD

Arch Ophthalmol. 1969;82(4):499-505.

Abstract

The histopathologic effects of xenon arc photocoagulation and laser radiation on the retinal vasculature of the dog were studied. Doses of light and laser coagulation similar to those used in the treatment of retinal detachments and vascular diseases of the retina were used. The vessels were examined in retinal whole mounts prepared by trypsin digestion. Vascular changes in the retina following minimal doses of light coagulation are more extensive than similar applications of laser radiation. Repeated applications of light coagulation result in more extensive changes in the vessels than following a single application.
