Guarded microvitreoretinal blade

During vitreoretinal surgery, the microvitreoretinal blade may be
misdirected and injure operating room personnel. A sheated, retractable
blade has been developed to reduce the likelihood of such injuries. In the
blade's retracted position, a safety feature prevents inadvertent exposure
of the sharp blade. This device may have its greatest utility in operating
on patients with cytomegalovirus retinitis who require either retinal
reattachment surgery or placement of a ganciclovir implant.
